Proud to be me!!

This week we had a lot of discussion about diversity and acceptance within our classroom.

We spoke about how in our classroom we are all different but we are all still beautiful and special.

We shared what makes us the same and what makes us different.

As a class the children then told me that they are proud of who they are. Each of us took it in turns to tell everyone else why they were proud. Here are all our posters.

Some students said they were proud of their cultures.

Some said they were proud of their ability to play sport.

Some students said they were who they are because of their friends and families.

We all shared what made us different and special, our eye colour, our clothes and our families.

Learning about different cultures

For social sciences we are learning about all the cultures within our class. Today Ian shared with us his culture, Chinese. Ian taught us all how to say thank you and teacher. Here is room 19 sharing their new found language.

Daily 5 and Daily 3!

This week in Room 19 we have been learning a new way of doing our maths and reading.
We have started the Daily 5 and Daily 3. By using these programs we hope to become independent learners, who are able to manage ourselves.

This week we learnt "Read to Self". This is where we are able to pick a book, poem, reader or big book of our choice. We are allowed to read three books in a session.

We learnt three ways to read a book:
1. Read the words
2. Read the pictures
3. Retell the story

So far we have done excellent stamina in read to self, we can go 21 minutes without any talking or interrupting.

In Daily 3 we learnt "Maths by Myself". This is where we need to complete a maths task independently. We learnt how to play boggle.

Water Safety!
Year 3 were lucky enough to experience a range of water safety exercises in our school pool.
They were pulled out of a boat, they learnt how to form a huddle and work together to stay a float and they had a chance to save another person.

We had heaps of fun and everyone learnt something new about being safe in the water.

This week we had a big focus on the Cyclone that hit Fiji.
As a class we have had many discussion about how the people of Fiji may be feeling and how we can help.

As a school we decided to do a coin trail and all in room 19 went down to donate their gold coin.
