Of to Rio!!

In maths we are planning our own trips to Rio!
The students are in groups of 4 and have to plan a trip to the Olympics. They have to work out how much their trip would cost including:
* accommodation
*food
*flights
*tickets

It is a great way for the students to apply their maths knowledge to help them solve a problem and allows them to develop their skills in working in a team.

The Olympics is on its way!!

This week I introduced the children to the country we will be representing within the school. Each class has a different country that they will represent for the Olympics. Our class will be the United Kingdom.

The students were great at thinking of ideas of what we can put in our classroom to represent the UK.

* Red double decker bus
* The Queen
* Flags
* Picture of their Olympic team

We also decided that we would make the flags of our own countries to support them as well.

Class Korowai

For Maori language week as a class we decided to make our own class Korowai to show our respect of the Maori culture. We each completed to feathers each which incorporated Maori patterns and one thing that represents us as a person.

The Witches

This term our shared novel was Roald Dahl's The Witches. We finished the book on the last week of term and as a way to finish we all decided to draw our favourite part of the story to display in our reading area. We can not wait to decide on our novel for next term.

FUN RUN!!!!

The day had arrived. All the hard work of fundraising and practicing our running was about to pay off. The students had a fantastic time on the fun run with all the different obstacles. They had to walk like a duck, run like a monkey, hop like a kangaroo and have a good old dance. It was so fun to see everyone joining in and having a good time. We have also raised a tremendous amount of money, around $20,000 which will be used to buy resources and equipment for the school. I would just like to thank all of the parents for their support as this is only possible because of you. Thank you!!

Kite Flying

 On the last day of term we finally got to fly our wonderful Matariki kites! It took the students a few turns before they figure out how to successfully fly their kites. Once the students mastered this they had a fantastic time. Everyone's kites looked so good and it was great to see that they all worked.

Experiment Time!

This week with our buddy class we decided to investigate water some more. We performed an experiment to see whether the food colouring would mix when one glass of water is placed on top of another.
The two experiments were:
* a glass of cold water with food colouring was placed on top of a glass of boiling water
* a glass of hot water with food colouring was place on top of a glass of cold water

We completed the cold water experiment first where the water mixed and changed colour. We then with our buddies predicted what would happen with the hot water on top.

Matariki Kites

Last week we joined room 11 in making kites to celebrate Matariki. I was so impressed with room 19, they have made fantastic images using Maori patterns. They also worked so well as a class helping each other to complete their kites. It was great to see them all working so well together.
